The Bethany and Rufus Roots Quartet not only released their new CD “Live À Fip” on October 22nd, but they performed tracks from it that same day at Les Trois Mailletz in Paris France (a local “cave” where Nina Simone used to play to rehearse for big show). The quartet released two videos from that performance, the first being “Oh, Death” a high energy number where Bethany Yarrow’s strong and passionate voice was accented and matched by Yacouba Moumouni’s vocals which mixed, intensified, and finally climaxed in a most satisfying manner. Backed by the masterful cello playing of Rufus Cappadocia and the rhythmic beats of ‘Bonga’ Jean-Baptiste, the performance was dynamic and powerful.

["1984" skillfully maneuvers its way from beginning to end as DeHaan puts her vocal range along with a knack for soothing tones to good use, singing in a soft, but gutsy manner. The guitar playing over a catchy beat works well with her voice to produce a sultry and graceful fusion of folk and rock.]

Bethany & Rufus - 900 Miles

"This tune is a great example of how these two musicians can mix styles. Where the lyrics and Bethany's tone affect a melancholy and ghostly feeling, Rufus' bass line is inescapably funky... A strange mix, to be sure, but Bethany and Rufus make it sound beautiful.

... The piece depicts both musicians slowly trekking down a long desolate railroad track and cuts to scenes of them playing together in a small cabin. The imagery captures the meaning of the song in an eery setting. It evokes a feeling of loneliness and desperation as Bethany sings of the train that will bear her home, a train that never seems to come."

Polarity/1 – Senhor Softee

The Battery Dance Company performs “I’ll Take You There” at the 26th Annual Downtown Dance Festival to the mesmerizing electronica of Polarity/1. “Senhor Softee” contributes magnetic pulses and playful xylophone to the soundtrack; however, this song is rather tame in comparison to Polarity/1’s usual chaotic melodies and unconventional sounds. This is not a bad thing, as even a simple beat from Polarity/1’s unique musical approach proves to be exciting and powerful.

Polarity/1 - The Marvin Stomp

Polarity/1s use of broken record sound at the start of The Marvin Stomp makes his song anything but broken. In fact, the introductory sounds are so upbeat that the repetition is quite satisfying. TryXo Indie Invasion Tour: Derek Jordan, The J.U.S. Evolution, 9Lies & DEIN Ex

Watch The Video

Four bands from three countries descended on Germany in June to rock out on the first leg of the TryXo Indie Invasion Tour. Thanks to TryXo (, an online music store geared toward independent artists, this unsigned talent had the chance to show a large audience what they're made of. Here you'll see a video collage of each of the four band's performances. They {Derek Jordan, The J.U.S. Evolution, 9Lies, and DEIN Ex} each brought unique styles and sounds to the stage and the crowd responded with wild enthusiasm.

Derek Jordan leads one of two American groups that will play on the Tour. Derek's music is all about individualism. He believes strongly in the fight against conformity and his music is his main weapon. He combines crunchy distorted guitar with heartfelt vocals for a sound all his own. The J.U.S. Evolution also hails from the States. They combine rock, replete with Jimi Hendrix-style guitar solos, and heavy hip-hop influences giving this Brooklyn born band an eclectic and unique style.

Europe is well-represented at the TryXo tour. 9Lies, from Northern Ireland, brings in music influences ranging from Nirvana to U2. They blend ethereal sounds with hard rocking guitars and phenomenal solos. Representing Germany and the continent is DEIN Ex (translated as Your Ex). This Wendlingen group sings about their relationships past. Their high emotion and defiant songs are consistent crowd pleasers.

These four bands, representing three countries, two continents and rocking out in two languages all shook the house. The first leg of the TryXo Indie Invasion Tour was an incredible musical event. The second leg of the tour will take place this October and November so mark your calendars.
